A Different Light

I am beginning to see computers in a different light. I had always assumed that I would be using computers on a one-on-one basis that is, one computer doing one thing and another computer doing another. I did have a setup like that where I had one linux box doing proxy stuff and another one doing my Internet surfing stuff and another doing my website stuff. That was ok and nothing was wrong with it except maybe they were eating up more electricity and we all know what it means to our environment.

A little later I learned that one could have virtual machines and that they could be existing side by side in one box and be doing their stuff without bothering and without being bothered by other virtual machines which could be existing on the same box. The main trick is to have enough computing power and to have enough memory.

Anyway, here's Cagayan de Oro City with another one: Cagayan de Oro City. My Cebu City site has made pr1, surprise, surprise. Dumaguete is still in the boondocks as far as Google goes but Dumaguete has made some headway. Jai Alexander rocks!

Again

What do you do when nothing seems to be happening the way you want? This has got to be the worst way to live. I do not think that I will ever find a way to get things going on the Internet but I keep at it anyway.

AMD Quad Core

I asked Botp about what equipments were needed for a call center business and he gave me a list of computer hardware which were heavily weighted by AMD Quad Core computers. The Workstations and Servers that he specified were all AMD Quad Cores. This prompted me to Google these specifications and I found out that indeed, a great deal has happened since I took a look at computer processors.

There was one mention of a Cray computer which had 24,000 AMD Quad Core processors all contained in a cabinet with liquid coolant to keep the temperatures from rising and melting these powerful processors. It certainly is a long way since The Connection Machine was invented and boasted of 65, 535 6502 processors that powered the Apple II computers.

The thing that made me realize is that there is a whole generation of processors that I probably will never be privileged to own simply because my needs are well-met by the garden-variety dual-core processors from Intel and AMD. For one thing, 1 gigabyte of DDR2 memory is now the entry-level offering of computer stores, a far cry from the time when I bought my PIII computer which had a whopping 128MB Ram when 32 MB was the standard.
